INKING CONTEST - PAID WINNER

I’m looking for an inker to do a very clean job of my line art here; I’m planning on colouring this piece in the near future. If you wish to enter this competition then please send me a note and I’ll add your name/deviation to my list.

The Winner of this competition will have their work used for my final coloured piece and will win $40 prize money via PayPal.
The closing date for this is 15/05/15 - All contestants need to have their inks ready for me to judge and decide a winner from this date. The download button should give you a high quality JPeg to work from at 500 resolution.

edit: 15th May 2015 RESULTS

Before I begin, I’d like to say a MASSIVE thank you to all 9 contestants who have entered my competition.

I can honestly say I’m blown away with the quality of these inkers work and it has been difficult to judge this. I didn’t specify a type of inking (whether it be inked digitally or a more traditional method), instead I’m going on what I find most visually pleasing on each character. I’ve made a side by side comparison in order to judge this fairly.

stump100 has used thick lines to make the characters stand out, his shading lines are dead straight and attention to detail is spot on what I was looking for. The eyes are well balanced and how I wished to see the glow from Rapunzel’s eyes. The face scars are good and most are wide enough to add a colour inside. A fine job indeed.

MattJamesComicArts has done a fantastic job with traditional inks. From his lines I can see a comic book inker at work here. He’s done a nice job on Rapunzel’s eyes and features and I really like the facial scars. I’m not completely in love with that bottom lip as the scar looks a little flat and not too keen on the extra lines next to it. Minus that ‘niggely’ little detail it’s a truly wonderful job, attention to detail is good, and a real amount of depth in his version, well done!

I really like terminus70’s take on Rapunzel. He’s gone with bold lines to separate important parts of the image, and he’s done a crosshatching design within Rapunzel’s eyes which I hadn’t thought to do; it looks very impressive and is the only one to add tear ducts. They are not in my picture but look the part. Overall very good piece.

...and in no particular order I just wanted to give some feedback to the other entries...

chickenMASK’s work is very clean, her lines are precise and well placed and even the shading lines are very good, but I felt it was missing impact. Her eyes are nicely done but I would have liked to of seen thicker lines to differentiate between hair, body and clothing, overall it’s precise, but a little flat. If it had thicker inks it would possibly be my favourite overall.

Laurenel has done a fairly good job of sticking to my lines, she has added thin lines for less important areas and picked up on where thicker strokes were needed. However, the image is not as sharp as I would have liked. I did notice a couple of extra lines which I didn’t feel were needed; Rapunzel’s eyebrow covers over her hair and a line running up the same side arm. Her shading lines are neat and straight, overall a good image.

Looking at it in great detail, brianrobinson’s used a good amount of different strokes for his approach. Overall he’s managed to capture this well and his work is very cleanly produced, I can’t fault him on extra lines. The only downside to his version is on closer inspection I found a few lines that go a bit squiggly and not everything looks as straight as I’d hoped, for example the ink work under Rapunzel’s left eye, all in all a very good entry.

zeldalegends4525 work is not bad at all, I can see a keen eye for picking up the detail, Rapunzel’s eyes are spot on and a very good job of using bold lines. What lets it down is possibly the conversion from paper to screen, I can see faint dark edges and it takes away from a superb job.

ADRIAN9’s version shows a level of skill for inking but he’s added in some areas and taken away from others. I noticed an unfortunate line within the image that distorts the picture around her belly button area and on Grunts chin. I enjoyed his take on this piece.

And last but not least on my list is Wryscher42’s piece. His version has very precise lines that copy my work very skilfully. It’s clean, its sharp and a good mixture of bold lines. If I were to grumble at anything I’d say her eyes lack a bit of continuity. The lashes to the left are big and chunky with a lot of black and if you look at the right he’s used thin lines on the lashes and not gone as thick on his strokes on her pupil. Apart from that, I’m very happy with it.

Left to right Miranda, Grunt, Shepunzel, Thane and Morinth.
I've drawn a variant cover to my Renegade Rapunzel story. This cover is loosely based on an old J-Scott-Campbell image from Gen-13 I fell in love with years ago.

The layout is the same but the characters are VERY different. I was going for more of a 'Adult Disney' feel. I'll be looking to ink and colour this soon.
